The Clarsach Course  | Tutor: Danielle Perrett & Máire Ní Chathasaigh Friday 18 – Sunday 20 October

For the first time The Clarsach Society joins forces with Benslow Music to offer this new course. Favourite Irish tutor and performer Máire Ní Chathasaigh joins Danielle Perrett to offer their deep insights into the performing styles, techniques and history of Celtic harp music. We’ll also gain much from the fiddlers and folk singers who will be working alongside us. We will be playing solos and ensembles and working both from notated music and by ear. And the tutors will be very willing to show off their own skills to inspire you further.

Esme’s Adventure – A harp concert in memory of Esme Morris Macintyre

Harp Concert for EsmeOn Sunday 16 February 2014, a harp concert will be held in memory of Esme Morris Macintyre. Esme battled a brain tumor for nearly 7 years and her courage and determination to live life to the full, always with a beautiful smile, was an inspiration to thousands of people. She wrote a searingly honest account of the challenges she faced through her Facebook page and she worked tirelessly to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

She set out to make the most of her short life with a wish list of people to meet and things to do. She met sporting heroes Sir Chris Hoy and Andy Murray and singers Amy Macdonald and Emeli Sandi. She took part in fashion shows, went snow biking and hot air ballooning.

Also on Esme’s wish list was for harp tunes to be written for her and clarsach players from across Scotland have risen to this challenge. Esme herself played the clarsach so the concert will be a fitting tribute to the life of a remarkable teenager and will continue her legacy of raising funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

3pm, Sunday 16 February 2014 – Kinross Parish Church, KY13 8TG

Tickets £10.00 available from:

The Clarsach Society and EIHF are delighted to announce the winner of the Young Composer Award as Christine Edwards from Aberdeenshire. Christine’s winning composition, The Pinnacle Suite for clarsach and cello, will premiere at the closing concert of the festival on Wednesday, 9 April. Well done Christine!

We’re also pleased to welcome Christine as a EIHF tutor this year. The latest chart hits and classic songs will be covered in her four-day course on Popular Music - so the next time you hear something you fancy on the radio, you can arrange your own harp cover! Christine will also lead our Adult Post-Beginner course, developing technique and giving guidance on how to use practice sessions effectively to aid progression. In a workshop on Teaching by Skype, Christine will share her own experience (pros and cons) of teaching using video conferencing software – an interesting discussion for both learners and tutors (part of the festival’s FREE seminar series for tutors).

KinderConcert are holding an event this weekend – here is an invitation from their team:

We are delighted to invite you to our 14th KinderConcert!

On Sunday, 23th March 2014 at 3pm we would like you to meet our youngest musician yet: Tuesday Rose, who will introduce the Clarsach to us. Tuesday Rose was born in 2000 and has been studying Clarsach for 5 years. She is a fluent gaelic speaker and won the medal for self-accompanied singing at the National Mod in Stornoway while still at Primary School. As well as playing and singing for private functions and garden parties, Tuesday Rose has sung and played the Clarsach live on radio and in a number of venues including The Queen`s Hall, The Usher Hall, The Royal Scots Club and The Edinburgh Society of Musicians.

Tuesday Rose likes to arrange and compose her own music for both self-accompaniment and Clarsach solo, and as well as her solo playing she also performs with a clarsach ensemble. She is a recipient of a grant from the EMI Foundation and The Verdi Trust.

KinderConcerts are designed as a gentle introduction to classical and traditional music for your child in a friendly environment, giving them a taster of different instruments. Your child might want to take up an instrument and would like to see different options in action, played by professional musicians, or you’d like to broaden your children’s musical horizon? Then look no further – KinderConcerts is the place to be!

The event will last around one hour: a 30 minutes performance, followed by a Q&A session with the musician, refreshments and snacks for the children and coffee and tea for the parents.

Please do let us know as soon as possible whether you would like to attend and how many of you there will be – although we have a bigger space available now, we’d still like to make sure we have a small audience and an intimate atmosphere.

Reservation is essential. If you miss out this time, we hope to welcome you to one of our future KinderConcerts.

Here are the details again:
Sunday, 23th March 2014, at 3pm, the address is 1 Chalmers Crescent, Edinburgh EH9 1TW. (There are two churches on this street, we are in the one that looks less like a church, is on your right, as you approach from the Meadows, and is slightly set back with a big front garden.)
We would kindly ask for a donation of £6 per person (or £18 per family).

Musical Greetings,

Iris and Anna
