In this new course you will learn about playing, arranging and accompaniment on the Clarsach in Highland and traditional music. Ingrid Henderson from Lochaber has been teaching the Clarsach for 15 years having learnt herself from the world renowned harpist Savourna Stevenson. She has performed on stages throughout the world as a solo artist and with bands such as Cliar and she has also won the BBC Radio 2 Young Traditional Award whilst in her early teens. This course is for students competent at playing at an intermediate level and above.
Young Composer Award 2013
The Clarsach Society is delighted to announce details of the fifth Young Composer Award. To apply, young composers aged 16 – 25 must submit an original work of 10 – 15 minutes for
a) Solo Clarsach/Non-pedal harp, or
b) Clarsach/Non-pedal harp and up to 3 other instruments and/or voices.
The winning work will be performed at the 2014 Edinburgh International Harp Festival and receive a cash prize of £500.

Glasbury Arts/Theatr Brycheiniog Harp Summer School | Gwernyfed High School near Brecon, Wales | 28 – 31 August
The third Glasbury Arts/Theatr Brycheiniog Harp Summer School will take place from Wednesday 28 to Saturday 31 August at Gwernyfed High School near Brecon and Theatr Brycheiniog in Brecon. Learners of all ages and stages are invited to take part in this exciting and unique event in this stunningly beautiful part of Wales. Tutors will be Gwenan Gibbard, Harriet Earis and Maire Ni Chathasaigh, who will each deliver a series of workshops and master classes. The classical harpist Katherine Thomas will give a recital on the Wednesday evening and there will be a public concert to include massed harps on the Saturday evening in Theatr Brycheiniog. Free taster sessions for complete beginners will take place there during the day on the Saturday. All are welcome to these and the evening concerts.

AILIE ROBERTSON’S HARP WORKSHOP (MIXED ABILITY)
Ailie Robertson has some of the most impressive credentials in the Scottish harp world. A five-time National Mod Gold Medallist, she was also 1st prizewinner at the inaugural London Harp Competition, and best overall musician at the Edinburgh Competition Festival. She has represented Commun na Clarsach for Scotland at the Pan Celtic Festival in Ireland, and in 2005 she was awarded a scholarship from the ESU in recognition of her ‘virtuosic clarsach playing’. She was the winner of the Live Ireland award for ‘Instrumental Cut of the Year’ for her debut album ‘First Things First’.

ABOUT NA CLARSAIREAN
Na Clàrsairean is the clarsach orchestra run by the Edinburgh branch of the Clarsach Society. It welcomes players from all areas, whether or not they are society members. Sessions cost £5 for adults and £2 for children/students. This payment covers the costs of running the session e.g. hiring and heating the hall, music, refreshments and tutors’ fees. If you prefer you can pay for a year’s sessions in January at the rate of £60 for adults, £24 for students and children.
Unless otherwise stated, rehearsals are at Craiglockhart Parish Church Hall, Craiglockhart Avenue, Edinburgh EH14 1HS. Be tuned and ready to start playing at 2 o’clock. We usually finish playing at 4.30 but most people stay on for a cup of tea and some home baking.
